Understanding Ratios
A ratio is a comparison of two quantities showing the relative sizes or amounts. Ratios can be written as "A:B", "A to B", or "A/B" and represent how many times one value contains another.
Simplifying Ratios
To simplify a ratio, divide both numbers by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, 12:18 simplifies to 2:3 because both 12 and 18 can be divided by 6.
Types of Ratios
- Part-to-Part: Compares one part to another (e.g., boys to girls 3:2)
- Part-to-Whole: Compares one part to the total (e.g., boys to total students 3:5)
