Understanding Percentage Change
Percentage change measures the relative difference between an old value and a new value. It's expressed as a percentage of the original value, making it easy to compare changes across different scales.
How to Interpret Results
- Positive %: Indicates an increase (growth, gain, improvement)
- Negative %: Indicates a decrease (decline, loss, reduction)
- Zero %: No change between values
- 100% increase: Value doubled (2x original)
- 200% increase: Value tripled (3x original)
- -50% decrease: Value halved (50% of original)
Key Concepts
- • Percentage change is always relative to the original (old) value
- • A decrease can never exceed -100% (can't lose more than everything)
- • An increase has no upper limit (can grow infinitely)
- • The order matters: going from 100 to 200 (+100%) is different from 200 to 100 (-50%)
