Understanding Percentage Change

Percentage change measures the relative difference between an old value and a new value. It's expressed as a percentage of the original value, making it easy to compare changes across different scales.

How to Interpret Results

  • Positive %: Indicates an increase (growth, gain, improvement)
  • Negative %: Indicates a decrease (decline, loss, reduction)
  • Zero %: No change between values
  • 100% increase: Value doubled (2x original)
  • 200% increase: Value tripled (3x original)
  • -50% decrease: Value halved (50% of original)

Key Concepts

  • • Percentage change is always relative to the original (old) value
  • • A decrease can never exceed -100% (can't lose more than everything)
  • • An increase has no upper limit (can grow infinitely)
  • • The order matters: going from 100 to 200 (+100%) is different from 200 to 100 (-50%)
